Graminoids (Grasses, Sedges, Rushes) ID for Wetlands and Wetland Delineators
Course Overview
This course is designed for wetlands delineators and others needing to recognize and identify sedges, grasses, and rushes in wetlands, especially taxa likely to be seen in the field during wetland delineations. This course is relevant throughout the United States, including Alaska, and will be taught live online via ZOOM using fresh and prepared, dried specimens (15-30) collected by Thomasson at wetlands and adjacent locations. Specimens will be sent to participants 7-10 days prior to class for use/reference during and after the course. Participants will also receive a class notebook with exercises describing and reviewing relevant reproductive and vegetative terminology necessary for identifying species of the Cyperaceae, Juncaceae and Poaceae in any geographic locality and a booklet with numerous, completely labeled, color images of many specimens used in class during live dissections. Participants will also be sent items such as a mm ruler, dissecting needles and razor knife for use during and after the class.

Receive fresh and dried specimens and a booklet of color, labeled images illustrating essential graminoid features and characteristics for reference after the course.
Notebook and Dissecting Tools
Your instructor will provide a notebook that will assist you in learning graminoid features used to identify species in any geographic locality. You will also receive disseccting needles, a razor knife, and ruler for use during the class.
Instructor Interaction
The instructor will show live dissection of specimens during the class with ample opportunity for participsnts to ask questions.

Dr. Joseph Thomasson is curator emeritus of the herbarium at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, KS, and has taught plant identification courses for WTI since 2011. He has taught university courses in agrostology, dendrology and plant taxonomy for more than 30 years, and has conducted plant surveys for many government agencies and private companies.”
