Plant Identification for Wetlands and Wetland Delineators
How Does This Course Work?
A course developed for wetland delineators and others needing to identify plant species used in defining wetlands and wetland boundaries, especially in the lower Midwest and Plains. Extra emphasis will be placed on species in the sedge, grass, rush, and daisy families due to their importance and abundance in wetlands.
In the lab participants will be introduced to sufficient plant terminology to enable them to use regional floristics keys and the internet to identify species. Field experience recognizing many common wetland species will be provided by anticipated trips locally to a fen, fringe wetland at a lake, salt marsh, and emergent marsh (Cheyenne Bottoms).
Plant lists, texts for keying, and a waterproof field guide and USB drive prepared by the instructor of color, labeled images of many species seen in the lab and field are provided. 32 contact hours/ Instructor: Thomasson.
