The 2025 Pocket Guide to Hydric Soil Field Indicators is taken from Version 9.0 (2024) of the NRCS Field Indicators of Hydric Soils in the United States (FIHS) released in September 2024. This version of FIHS incorporated changes made by the National Technical Committee on Hydric Soils prior to and soon after their May 29-30, 2024 anuual meeting. Of particular note, Version 9.0 includes a new indicator for Iron Monosulfide (A18) to be used with saturated soils lacking typical redox features.  The indispensable Simplified Keys to Hydric Soil Indicators for all ten USACE Regional Supplements (developed by Phil Scoles, Terra Science, Inc.) at the end of the Pocket Guide have been updated and we have also added a key for contrast determinations.
The new Pocket Guide is the same convenient 4.5″ X 6.75″ size as the version 8 edition. It still contains individual maps for each indicator and added information such as the texture triangle and texture by feel diagram. Over the years we have found that the reduced-size color pictures have added little value to the Pocket Guide because they are seldom used in the field. To keep the cost low, we have eliminated most of the color figures while enlarging the color LRR Map and Figure 6 for depleted matrix.
